Texas started out hot and then got even hotter! The crops had more weeds than normal due to the wet spring. However the weather did cooperate for us and we finished in a week. The wheat was averaging 30 bushels to the acre. June 6th we moved to Burns Flat, Oklahoma, and we were met with green wheat. The bushels varied from field to field depending on the variety of wheat. June 11th we moved to Wellington, Kansas. On Monday the 14th we had over five inches of rain so our harvesting was put on hold. Justin’s parents were here from New Zealand so we had a chance to visit and have dinner. It was fun to talk with them and share stories. We took the boys to the Route 66 museum in Clinton, Oklahoma, and that was the extent of our rain day vacation, if you can call it that! June 17th we are back harvesting and the fields are much better than last year. The wheat is averaging 30 bushels to the acre here also. So far the machines have been running good and everybody is getting comfortable with their new jobs. The rest of the week is supposed to be hot and dry so we should be able to keep harvesting the acres. |
